This is very cute but I myself like everyday ceramic ware without an artist's name.

  1. Gardenia, The name pug is derived from the Greek word pugalist which means a boxer. Among us Occidentals small noses are rare so a small nose is called a pug nose because boxers often have broken noses. Pug has also come to mean a small, agressive person because of the boxing association. There is also the expression "pug ugly" because boxers often have disfigured faces.

  2. The artist meant "pug" as a verb;to temper (clay) for making bricks, earthenware, etc.;
    He thought "pug" was suitable for a clay elf.

  3. I have seen the collection, and this one here in the picture is the cutest. He's having a wonderful time laughing, holding his stomach.

    Hey little Pug, why are you so happy?

  4. Gardenia san, Interesting, I have never seen pug used as a verb before although I have heard of a pug mill for processing clay. Most potters call it kneading the clay but pugging the clay sounds better. In any event Pug looks like a very content ball of clay. Milton
