Why should we check our car every two years?

In Japan, we have to have a safety check on the cars every two years( Motor-vehicle inspection). I think Japanese cars have good quality so we don't need any forced inspection by law. We can maintain our cars in good condition by ourselves.
It takes 39,500Yen(about395US$)for weight tax for under 2000cc displacement cars.
Weight tax is used to maintain roads. Do we have to pay the tax? I don't know.

  1. Gardenia san, In Texas we have yearly vehicle inspections that cost about $35. The vehicle inspections are more for emissions than for safety. Road use taxes are placed on fuel so that the vehicles that use the roads the most pay the most. License fees for most cars are about $50 per year. The real expense for car owners in Texas is insurance, We pay over $300 per month for two cars. Milton

  2. There is a rumor in Japan that US don't have the vehicle inspection. When we watch US TV or movies there are many battered cars running in rural area. We think they have freedom to ride a car as long as the car move without any inspection.300$ per month is too expansive! That means 1800$ per a year for one car.

  3. All of the states that I know about have yearly vehicle inspections. Although they do a safety inspection it is usually just to check the lights, tires obvious thing. The real reason for inspections is to check to make sure that the emissions are not too high. It isn't just in rural areas that you see battered old cars running, there are lots of them in the cities as well, passing inspections isn't all that difficult. It is expensive to have a care here but I should tell you that Texas is one of the most expensive states for insurance, for both cars and houses. You at least have the option of using public transportation, that isn't really possible here.
